i think the only "new" album i bought this year was the fantastic new tom waits; rather ive been catching up on a lot of stuff i missed out on that was released in the past. the bigggg one is nick cave and the bad seeds. i bought "dig lazarus dig" when it came out in 2008 and there are a couple of superb songs on that album and i became a fan. but for some reason i didnt go and pick up his back catalogue at that time.. i think the reason is simple - lazarus was his 14th? 15th? record - so where do you go next?! especially when youre a student and cant afford to buy something youre never gonna listen to again.

its like if someone said they wanted to get into bob dylan, it is impossible to just give them one record, you need at least 4 or 5 to get an idea of what he has done. imagine if a kid went into a record shop looking for bob dylan and all they had was "down in the groove". you see what i mean?

so with nick cave i didnt know where to dive in. thankfully i have a friend from way back who is a big fan and she told me to start with "murder ballads" and "let love in". but shit, i got them and those records were just so good i went and picked up "the boatman's call" and "no more shall we part" and yikes the more i listened the more i loved it. i couldnt stop there, so now ive got pretty much everything he has released, and a little annoyed i didnt get into this before but very very happy to know it now. my album of his changes with the tide, but this week i have been listening a lot to "no more shall we part", and this song is particularly good:

of course, im also loving grinderman, nick cave's garage band, but i hear they just broke up a few weeks ago. tis a shame, but hopefully it means we get another bad seeds record next year. man, i hope icon girl pistols are still rocking like this when we are in our 50s (and that we are appropriately bearded):

先日の赤坂のライブの模様がアップされています。
ギャルズがステージの上で踊ってこそロックンロールだと思っていた僕は、
こんな風にギャルズと、そして男達が大騒ぎすることによってステージで狭い思いをしたって、全然構わないんです。

日本のライブハウスは、盛り上がってもいないのに、ステージ前に柵が一応あったりして、照明ビカビカしてスモーク焚いたりしてても、お客さんはつまらなそうに壁に寄り掛かって聴いていたり、それを見た他のお客さんは、会場に入ってきても入り口の前で金縛りにあったようにかたまっちゃったりして、

ほんとーにつまんなくて、サイアク。

遊びに来てるんだから、会場も、照明も、ステージも、音楽も、みんな来てくれる君達のためにあるんだ。

だから僕たちがライブをやるとき、ステージ上は常に空いています。
マイクも一本余計においてあります。

このバンドは始めた時から、難しいことはやらないって決めたんだ。
だから、いつでもドラムが鳴ったらそれを合図に、踊り始めればいい！

今年のチャンスはあと２回。

goodbye donuts (hey, statue of liberty)

so most people will have noticed the message on the front page giving a release date of october 22nd for the new record.
hooo yah we are excited about it - NEVERCREW have done an amazing job with the artwork (the current image is just a teaser, the main picture will be revealed later!) and it was great to record it all in 2 days in analogue in a funky little place out in the middle of nowhere. it is the first music we have recorded without takashi (although 'we that remain' was recorded in april, we brought him in to help play percussion!), so the guitar sound is quite different, but we are very pleased with the result.

you see that we have called it an album, but maybe mini-album is more appropriate. more than an EP, not quite an an LP. i was thinking about this a wee while ago, because 30 years ago albums needed to be approximately 45 minutes so that they would fit onto two sides of an LP. if you went over that time, you needed to make it a double-album.
then the CD came along, and suddenly you could make an album 60, 70 minutes long, and a lot of bands did.
sometimes this was a great thing - there are some fantastic albums hitting 70 minutes in length, but unfortunately there are also a lot of records than contain two or three good songs, and a bit of filler just to get it up to the 60 minute mark (im sure some people might say the same about our first album)

now we live in an age where people dont buy CDs or vinyl records (much) anymore, and albums can be as long as one wishes. and i think the listening mentality has changed a little.
i remember getting albums when i was in high school, putting on the CD and listening to it start to finish while following the lyrics in the booklet. i dont think people do that much anymore. nowadays everything is on digital devices, and very often on a random mix with whatever other music is on there.

so, we wanted to put out something with the songs that we have enjoyed playing in practice and those which work best with the sound we are making at our gigs recently. we were thinking about doing a double album this time, but instead cut it right down to more than an EP, not quite an LP. a simple half hour of music.
which is great for me, because that is exactly how long my commute to work is.

Last year a young lady asked me what were my top ten favourite albums of all time. I cannot remember what I wrote down back then, but as of today the list is (probably) as follows:

ポッキーを再生

YMOを観た。

中学生の時、YMOというグループの作品に初めて触れた時には、すでにグループは散開していた。

間もなく、突然「再生」したかと思うと、「TECHNODON」というミニマルなアルバムを発表してそしてまた沈黙した。

記憶が定かではない。もしかするとYMOの音楽に触れたのは「TECHNODON」が切っ掛けで、そこから遡るように過去の作品を掘り起こしていったのかも知れない。
このアルバム制作の過程をとらえたドキュメンタリー内容の本を、俺は何度も繰り返し読んで、ウイリアム・バロウズという人の事を知ったり、ジェニー・ホルツァーという人の言葉の意味を考えたり、ブレードランナーという映画について興味をもったりした。
何より、音楽作品を制作するにあたって、背景となる思想やディテールへのこだわり、アートワーク全体のコンセプト、それら全てをミニマルミュージックに反映させようとする姿勢に、何とも言えない刺激を受けた。
そして、山本耀司のデザインやニューヨークという街に想いを巡らせた。

しかし、知らない間にその「再生」の盛り上がりもどこかへ消えてしまっていた。
テクノミュージックは次の世代にバトンが渡され、次々に出てくる刺激的なサウンド、DJ達が過去を更新していった。
結局俺は一度もYMOのパフォーマンスを観る事なく、YMOの存在を忘れていた。

だからYMO名義でフジロックへの出演がアナウンスされた時に、俺の中で忘れていたものが突然思い出された。
これは観ておくべきだろうなと感じた。

布石はなんとなくあった。
昨年知り合えた先輩のギタリストから、突然YMOの影響を指摘され、自分では全く思ってもみなかったことだったが、懐かしく思って聞き返していた。
それに伴って、前述したドキュメンタリーの本を読み返したりもしていた。
そこに書かれていた内容は、中学生の時点では単なる未知への憧れだったが、今となってはより具体的に共感できるものとなっていたことにも気付いた。

自分の音楽に直接的な関わりがあるかどうかは分からないが、彼らの活動が、今の自分に繋がる一部を形作ってきたのは事実である。

結局のところ、フジロック行きを断念してしまった俺は、観なかった事で後悔するのを恐れた。
そして、YMO主催の野外フェス、world happiness 2011に、YMOを観るためだけに訪れたのである。（実際のところはYUKIとTOWA TEIのDJも観れた。TOWAについて語るべきことも沢山あるけれど、割愛）

演奏曲目を追った詳細な解説は控えることにする。

俺が現在のYMOのライブを観て感じた事。
・こういう種類の音楽は音が拡散してしまう野外より屋内の方が良いだろう。シンセサイザーで作り出した流麗なコードワークは会場後方に届く前に、立ちこめる雲のようにぼやけたものになってしまう。

・YMOの三人は大変優れた作曲家であり、音楽家ではあるものの、優れたパフォーマーとは言い難い。少なくとも現在のYMOの演奏においては。演奏家のカタルシスがオーディエンスの熱狂に直接的に繋がっていると実感。それを一瞬垣間見せてくれたのは、小山田圭吾の「千のナイフ」あたりでのギタープレイ。

・しかしその小山田圭吾を含めたサポートの演奏がYMOの音楽的魅力を正確に伝えていたかどうかは微妙。演奏力は勿論素晴らしい。しかしそもそも彼らのライブパフォーマンスは、演奏できるのにしない、あえてエレクトリックドラムを使用する、などといった抑制の中に魅力があるような気もするので、多くの部分を生楽器の演奏で再現してしまうと、緻密さが損なわれたような気がした。

・歌の力、というのは絶大なものがある。これは一番の強烈な発見かも知れない。YMOに「歌」が無かったからこそ感じたことである。

以上、批判的視点での省察。
そして今後の自分のためのメモ。

反面、素晴らしかった部分はとてもとても沢山あるが、此処には書かない。
俺、YMO観るためだけにフェスのチケット代全部払ったんです。
観た人だけが味わったものにしておきましょう。

アンコールの「東風」のイントロにはやはり鳥肌立ちましたよ。そういうこととか。

中川まりなへの回答を発端として

彫刻のような表現というのは、即ち、付加するのではなく削り取っていく表現ということであります。

そして、今一番興味があるのは、意味性の排除であります。

観念芸術の時代はもう終わっていますし、コンセプトが受け手に伝わるところまでを含めての表現形態っていうのは最近あまり興味が無くなってきています。

伝えたいメッセージがある、というのは、それは芸術としては嘘なんじゃないかと思ったりもします。

いつもいつも伝えたいメッセージがある人っているのだろうか？
前回の話じゃないけれど、安っぽい日本の音楽を作っている「アーティスト」の「アー」のアクセントが「ティ」より低い音で呼ばれるような人達は、最新作ではこの、「メッセージを伝えたい」ということを競って言っているけれど。

芸術表現が素晴らしいのはその意味性よりも、それ自体が「美」であることなんじゃないかと思います。

詩ならば、その言葉の裏にある意味ではなく、その並んだ言葉がただ美しいことで成立する。

絵画や音楽も本来的にはそういうものだったはずで、勿論、時代の要求、生活の要求からそれらは意味と結びつけられたり、商業と結びつけられたり、もしくは逆に意味から意図的に自由であろうとして破壊的であったりしてきたわけですが。

結局時を経ても残っているもの、それは意味性を排除して、現象として美しいからじゃないかと思うのです。

マルセル・デュシャンって人の有名な作品に「泉」ってのがあります。
あの作品の重要性は、一般的には意味に対するアンチテーゼという、ダダ的な視点で語られてきています。
勿論、そういうことは多分にあったのかもしれませんけれど、結局は匿名性を帯びた一つの白い便器が、空間に出現し、展示されることで、そのままの現象としての美しさがあったんじゃないか、デュシャンは芸術放棄を宣言したんじゃなくて、あれを美しいと思ったんじゃないかと想像します。

つまり、言いたいのは、僕は今あなたが何を考えて作るのか、ではなく、
あなたが見たいものが見たい。

僕がなんのために作るのかではなく、作ってしまったものを見たい。

自分にとっても価値の分からないものに命を賭けてみる、と岡本太郎氏は言っていました。

そこまで大袈裟なことじゃなくてもいい。

でも、誰かが見たがっているものを見せようと躍起になっている現代だからこそ、僕は、あなたが理由もなくただ見たいと思って作ってしまったものを、見たい。

そんな個人の視点に立脚した表現じゃなければ、これから面白いことなんて何もないような気がして。

そんな気がして。

僕も、僕の作品もこれからは真剣にそうあろうと思っているんです。

続・岳物語

それで、それがなんでなんだろうなと考えてみる。

素晴らしいミュージシャンが日本にも沢山いることは知ってる。
大きいレコードレーベルから発売されているレコードを作っている、
誰もが知っているような人の中にも、美しい声だな、と思わせる人や、
戦ってるな、と伝わってくるような人、居る。

でも、俺はその音楽を買うかっていったら買わないだろうな。
なんでだろう？

日本語で歌われているから好きじゃないのかな。
だとしたら自分のやっていることには大きな矛盾があるな。

サウンドの質感が好きじゃないのかな。

自分が日本人でありながら日本人を軽視してるのだろうか。

・・・

もしかしたら、歴史と伝統の上に成り立っていないからなのかもしれない。
借り物の西洋音階の上で、借り物のアフリカンリズムの上で、借り物のポップミュージックを作り始めて４０年くらい？
優れた日本の音楽人であっても、新作で新しいサウンドに挑戦、新しいリズムに挑戦と言われた時に、それまでの（その人物の）歴史と、将来に続いて行く時間の流れが見えない。
そんなことがある気がして。

勿論ポップミュージックってのは上澄みであって、多くの創作物の堆積となった山の頂きに遠くからでも確認できるような白い雪の部分みたいなもの。

だからポップミュージシャンは、新作をつくる毎に、山の頂きから頂きをピョンピョンと飛び渡るようにしていくもので、堆積である山の生成とは関連性がなくてもいいのかも知れない。

こんなことは当たり前のことで、きっと前述のレコードレーベルにしたって、ヘリコプターで直接山頂に到達して白い雪をかっさらっていくその効率を第一に考えているだろう。
それは、日本だけに限ったことではなく、海外であっても当然同様。
それが資本主義社会、功利主義社会ってもんだ。

でもさ、俺はここらで真剣に考えてみたいと思ってる。
自分の音楽が自分と似た様な考え方の人に、同じように受け入れられないことは、悲しい。
なにより自分が日本人の作る音楽に期待を持てず、小学校の時のようにドキ胸しないことは、もっと悲しい。切なさを消せやしない。

どうしたものかな。
自分はこれから何をどんな気持ちで作っていくべきか。

ある先輩ミュージシャンにこんなような話をしたら、
日本のポップスの歴史はそれだけ浅いわけだから、まだ未熟で、評価されるべき水準に達していない。それだけにこれから可能性があるんじゃないかな、なでしこJAPANのようにいつか世界をひっくり返すこともできるんじゃないか。
そう言っておられた。

これは逆転の発想で、確かに、片目から鱗。

そういうこともあるかも知れないな。
今日本の音楽世界で戦ってる人は木村和司であり、ラモスなのかも知れないな。
カズが続いて、ヒデが出てきて、いずれインテルに入る様な選手がでてくるように、そんなミュージシャンが現れるのかも知れないな。

でも悲しいのは、スポーツはそうやって偉大な選手を真っ直ぐに目標とすることができるけれど、日本の音楽界には憧れのスーパースターが居ないことだね。

本日、処世のために通っている職場の有線放送より、
１０時から１８時までの間途切れる事無く日本の歌謡音楽がかかっていた。

そこで強烈に分かってしまったこと。

俺、この後死ぬまで、これらの音楽を制作しているレコードレーベルに対して、
１円たりとも金銭を払うことはないだろう。

日本のレコードレーベルが作っている音楽は自分にとって徹底的に完膚なきまでに、無。
有害でも無害でもなく、なんの感情も起こさせない、ただの現象としての音。

批判的な精神で書くんじゃなくて。

こまったな。
これから、どうしたもんかな。

今日のスタジオでやっとこの3年間追い求めてきた音が鳴った気がする。
ひさしぶりに音を合わせててにやにやした。
IGPというバンドの基本のベースとなる音が出来上がってきた。
今取り組んでる曲も出来上がりそうだし。

やっとRadioheadで言ったらPablo Honeyが出来上がりそう。
やっとスタートラインに立てそうな感じがしてる。

けど今までの目標は見えてきたけど、
やっぱり人間に欲はあって、
このバンドでもっと沢山やりたいことはあるし、
今までやってきたことも楽しいけど、また違うこともしたいし、
何が最高かはわからないし、まだPablo Honeyも完成してないけど、
今後OK ComputerもBendsもHail To The Thiefも作りたいし、
Radioheadとやってる音楽は違うけれど、
IGPも次は何をやるのかわくわくさせる、待ってくれている人々を期待させるもの、
期待を裏切るものをこれから作っていきたい。
死ぬまでにやりたいことを全てできるかな。

とりあえずひさびさに冒険したい気分。
攻めたい。

そんなことを思いながらさっきCreepを聴いてにやけていました。

so these amazing artists at NEVERCREW asked if they could use our music for one of their projects, and we are so pleased that it turned out such a cool video. i checked out their website too (www.nevercew.com) and these guys are incredible... i love their wall art and their canvas work especially, it is superb. definitely definitely check it out. i really hope that icon girl pistols and nevercrew can collaborate on something again in the near future.

it has been over a month since i started the drag of businessman life, and that makes me what the japanese call a "shakaijin", which literally translates as "member of society".

now, i have a really big problem with this word.

perhaps it originally had a broader meaning, but recently being a "shakaijin" means that you wear a suit, cram onto a rush hour train, work 9-5 monday to friday (in theory; of course japan is notorious for overtime and weekend shifts), read the financial times and vote conservative.
there is absolutely nothing wrong with this idea, but my problem comes with the fact that for some reason, not fitting into the above stereotype somehow exempts you from being a "shakaijin" in the eyes of many people.

it reminds me of when i was a student and people would often use the term "tax-dodger" (although to be honest we mostly used it to talk about ourselves). I always felt this term was erroneous because
a. we are still paying tax on everything we buy, and we still get taxed for our part time work; and
b. "dodge" suggests that any tax benefits we do get wont come back around to haunt us in the future. If somebody dodges a bullet, then the bullet goes safely over their shoulder and buries itself in the wall or some other poor chap. you dodged the bullet, well done. you're safe now.
however, "tax-dodging" is a complete misnomer, because as soon as you finish studying and get a job you then have to pay taxes sufficient to support the next generation of students. it all comes around again; those few years when you didnt have to pay property tax as a student means that when you start working you have to pay more. it all balances out. it is more like avoiding a heat seeking missile - it is going to catch up with you eventually.

this then leads older people to grumble "my taxes, paying for your education" as if it is some great sacrifice. it isnt. when they were students, someone else paid for them. even more in fact - 20 years ago university in britain was covered by the government for many people; now kids are having to pay more and more out of their own pocket.
working people seem happy to pay a pension, because it is a benefit they will get in the future, but like to grumble about paying for education, something that they have already finished in the past. but it is exactly the same system. people working right now pay for the young and pay for the old. it all balances out. there is no dodging the tax, it all comes around again.

anyway, ive gone off on a bit of a tangent. back to my initial point - .
"shakaijin" is a ridiculous term in japanese, because it excludes shop assistants, sewer workers, gas station attendants, rubbish collectors... the list goes on.
these people are still paying their taxes, and without them society would be fucked. they are "shakaijin" too, and I respect them because without them, nothing would work.

we need students and we need construction workers; otherwise the system collapses. a lot of people dont seem to realise that. we are all equal - i might work in an office, but i sure as hell dont know how to make a moccha chocca frappucino. thankfully there is somewhere i can go and someone i can ask when i need one, so i am definitely not going to think i am any better than them, or dare suggest that they are not a "shakaijin" too. we are all cogs in a machine; i do my thing; they do theirs. that is all.

excuse my ranting on this humid saturday morn.

just to confirm there will be no NOB show in june - we had some trouble with scheduling. but we have been confirmed for GamusoFest on july 17th and another eathquake relief gig on aug 27th at what the dickens so there will definitely be a couple of gigs this summer. hopefully we can squeeze our next NOB in between there somewhere. stay tuned.
meanwhile we are going to start doing some recording next week. it might be for an album, or an EP or just a single... still not sure how we are going to approach our next release, but shinnosuke has been writing as prolifically as ever so we have a huge group of songs to chose from. almost too many for ken and i to keep up. exciting times.

on an unrelated note, on recommendation of a dear friend i recently bought "Apocalypse" by Bill Callahan which is bloody great. I'd encourage anyone to give it a listen, or if youre poor just download the song "America!". superb.

I know that it is frightfully tedious to hear someone relay the experiences of a dream, especially since there is a tendency to forget the plot halfway through, but I had one the other night which was just fantastic and so wish to record it for my own amusement if nothing else.
I was in a grand theatre hall, the kind with billowing red curtains and velvet seats and gold leaf on the bannisters of the royal booths, and I was watching Roger Waters performing "The Wall". However, after the first song (which was 'Mother', strangely, completely out of order), Roger disappeared and a play began that was filled with bizarre political commentary. Then I noticed I was sat next to Christopher Hitchens, who had written this play, and who was now bellowing with laughter as people around him heckled the play and began leaving the theatre.
Well, as you may have guesssed I cannot remember what happened next, but good lord it was fantastic to see Hitch on fine form yelling at everyone. It is a sad sad thing that he has lost his voice, but we can be grateful that he has not lost the power of words. He writes about losing it to cancer in this essay:

昨日、チャリティーシングルを発表した。
「のこされた僕ら／We That Remain」
そういう曲。

今回の大災害からもう１ヶ月。このことに対して多くのテキストが既に消費された。
いまさら俺が文章で書くことなんて何もない。
だから、曲を作りました。というか、できました。
先週の土曜日の夜７時に。

聴いて下さい。
チャリティーといっても、無料でダウンロードできます。
俺達にはみんなから上手に集金する手段がない。
それを整えるには時間がかかりすぎる。
音楽ってナマモノだから、すぐに調理して食べてもらわないと。
だから、聴いて楽しんで、それでいいです。
お金の支援はどこででもできるでしょう。
みんな自分で考えてそんなことちゃんとできる。

この曲は、俺の書いた日本語の原曲をクリスがリズムを失わないように
英語に翻訳してくれた。
韻律もちゃんとしてるのに、俺の書いた内容の９０％くらいはちゃんと訳されている。
この曲はなんてことなく聴こえるかもしれないけれど、
内容といい、発表までのエネルギーといい、日本語の表現、英語の表現という意味でも、icon girl pistolsがやった仕事の中でベストのものの一つだ。

俺が書いた曲の中でも、人生的に誇れる数曲の中の一つだと思う。
欧米的なフォークの旋律に、非常に日本的な単純な言葉を落とし込んだ。
自分が８０歳になっても誇りをもって歌える曲になるだろう。

曲はホームページのtopからダウンロードできるし、そこに健が歌詞も全部載せてくれてる。
ギターがあれば誰にでもすぐ歌える。
手拍子や空き缶や空き瓶があればすぐにみんなで盛り上がれる。

We received an email yesterday from EMI Records, home of the Sex Pistols, informing us that they were taking legal action against any bands using the word 'Pistols' in their name. This is the latest in a series of court battles being fought by Johnny Rotten and Co. against the deformation of the Sex Pistols' legacy.

Rather than fight this long and expensive legal battle, Icon Girl Pistols have therefore decided to change our name to Icon Girl Pencils effective immediately.

We will be re-printing the album cover in the near future, but we ask that you all change the name of our band in your iTunes libraries etc.

これ、アンコール４ってかいてあるけど、ほんとは７回くらいだった。
最後のアンコールは歌い終わる度にギターを降ろして、声援を浴びるんだけど、
声援浴びてるうちに帰れないと思ったのか、また１曲、また１曲と続けていく感じで。
結局2時間ちょっとで２８曲。全部完全に一人きりで歌い上た。

今回の公演は、ソロでの来日ってことで、バンドが観たいファンからは期待外れとの声もあったみたいだけど、俺は、こういうライブが観たかったから感激しました。

ステージにはアコースティックから、ハコもののギターまで６本ぐらい並んでいて、
センターに立ち用のマイク、ちょっと横に座り用のマイク。
譜面台にはipadとネタ帳。小さいテーブルを置いて、そこにドリンクと何やら小物を少々。

会場の照明は非常灯まで完全に落とされて、コステロのひっそりとした自宅に案内されたような雰囲気だった。
ピータードハーティーとかもよくやっているけど、こういうソロの宴、みたいなのはイギリスではよくあることなのかなあ。
多分曲順なんて大体しか決まってなくて、観客の声に応えるように次々と持ち歌を披露するコステロの姿、俺にとっては理想的だった。
バンドでこういうアットホームな雰囲気というか、観客との親密なコミュニケーションを計るのは中々難しいことだけど、IGPというバンドは常にその距離感でライブができたらいいと思ってる。
そうした距離感についてもそうだし、ギター１本と歌だけで2時間、観客を飽きさせないで魅了し続ける力量と構成力ね。演出なんか勿論殆どないけど、それでも沢山のメリハリがあって、最終的にはアンコール以降観客全員を総立ちにさせてしまう、そんなライブ全体の見せ方が非常に勉強になった。

セットリストを見てもらえば、知ってる人なら分かると思うけど、ヒット曲、名曲の連発。
(the angels wanna wear my)red shoes、Veronica、watching the detectives、Alison、She、Oliver's army、(what's so funny 'bout)peace, love and understandingなど、要所を押さえた超有名曲だけあげてもこんだけ。

しかし、中でもハイライトだったのは、最新アルバム「national ransom」から披露された、a slow drag with Josephineからその次のalmost blueへの流れ。
センターでこのアルバム曲の美しいフィンガーピッキングに沿うように優しく歌い上げていたコステロは、途中からマイクから完全に離れて、まったくの生声で観客に語りかける。
PAもそれに反応してギターの音量をオフにし、会場に響くのは全くマイクを通さない、生のアコースティックギターのつま弾きと、コステロの掠れた生声だけ。
そのまま次の曲では、ステージの淵に腰掛け、同じように全くの生声で１曲を演奏。
会場は文化村オーチャードホールで、それほど小さい会場でもないのに、最後列までコステロから漏れる声の吐息が伝わってくる、そんな瞬間だった。

勿論彼は今でも全然現役のアーティストだし、額縁に飾られて崇められるような歳では全然ないし、本人もこれからもそんなことは望まないだろう。
でも、やっぱりエルビスコステロってのは俺にとっては一つの伝説だし、ボブディラン、ジョンレノンといった歴史的存在の次の世代の、ジョーストラマーやパティスミスと同様の音楽ナイス野郎なんだよね。
だから、同じ空間に彼がいて、その生声を聴けるってのは、それがレノンだったとしたらヨーコだけがもってた特権みたいなもんですよ。
そういう意味で、俺にとってはこの瞬間がまさにこの"solo"公演が持っていた一番の魅力であり、最高の瞬間だったな。

ギターが時々つまったりとかね、構成を忘れそうでギリギリのとこがあったり、歌はまあ完璧だったけど、曲が終わる度に満面のドヤ顔をしてみせたりと、かなり人間臭いところが垣間見えたのもとても良かった。

きっとコステロは今も昔もあんな感じで自宅にギターを並べて弾き語り、新しい名曲ができる度に一人でほくそ笑んでいるんだろう。
そういった意味では自分となんら変わりのない音楽好きのただの男が、ステージに立って、長い間観客を共有し続けているんだと思うと、それは理想的な生き方だななんて思いました。

自分の曲の間に、ビートルズやディランを混ぜて歌ったりしてさ、随分楽しかっただろうよコステロのおっさん。

I'm trying to understand why, when I go to a shop to buy something, clerks in Japan are always quick to say, "This is very popular". Do Japanese people actually like that?
I was out with the missus looking for a wedding band and we went into a jewellery shop where we were shown a ring that is "very popular" this year. Why would we want the same ring that a thousand other people are wearing?

Am I alone in thinking this?

I had an interesting conversation with a friend a while back that came to mind again today as I copied a new CD onto my computer. We had been reminiscing about our high school days, when we would drink beer and talk nonsense at one or the other’s house, all the while listening to our favourite CDs. By the time I was eighteen my copy of ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magic’ had been completely worn out, and various other soundtracks to my youth had also spun their way towards near oblivion – ‘The Battle of Los Angeles’, ‘Word Gets Around’, ‘Nevermind’, ‘Without You I’m Nothing’, ‘Relationship of Command’, and others too embarrassing to mention here. I guess it was the same for millions of other kids born in the 80s. But no matter where the house party, how late the hour or how many cans of Strongbow lay empty in the sink, the night would always end with a run through of the Manic Street Preachers’ ‘The Holy Bible’ for the few remaining stragglers sprawled out on the carpet as the grey morning approached. From the opening dialogue of ‘Yes’ to the desperate voice at the end of ‘PCP’, the room was silent but for the album and the occasional cry chiming in with James Dean Bradfield’s ‘who’s responsible – you fucking are!’ or ‘so damn easy to cave in, man kills everything!’. The record would finish, the CD would spin out, and silence would descend.

My friend told me about having recently listened to the Holy Bible again through an iPod on speakers. It sounded fine, and the songs were as brilliant as ever, but there was something important missing from the experience – he was talking of course about that sound at the end, after the music stops. For my parent’s generation, it would have been the scratch of the needle as it wound its way towards the centre of the turntable before rising and returning to its bed. For us it was that whoosh as the spinning of the CD came to an end. That sound has now been lost, thanks to digital playlists and shuffles and iTunes and all those other inventions which are killing the concept album.

I remember the first time I saw an iPod when I was seventeen or eighteen. One of the kids in my school had one set up with the radio connector which allowed you to play it through a stereo. I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever seen, and I wanted one immediately. I saved up my money, and the summer before my first year of university I bought an iPod. My oh my, who’d have thought it would have ever gotten so huge. Who’d have thought that only a few years later you could instantly buy any song online and have it playing on your phone in seconds? Steve Jobs maybe. When I was a kid, if there was one song you wanted, you had to buy the entire album. Hence my possession of a Smith’s cover album just for the Cursive song; of the Godzilla soundtrack for ‘No Shelter’; of the Good Will bloody Hunting soundtrack just for Eliot Smith. If only I had grown up in this age of pick ‘n’ choose, I’d have been a far richer teenager.

So, maybe I’m an old fart. But I miss the excitement of going out, buying a record, coming home and flicking through the artwork for surprises. Remember the hidden booklet in the Kid A album? Anyone else line up to get a numbered edition of Maladroit? What about hidden tracks? There is no mystery if you can already see that the song is 14 minutes long before you start listening to it. Super Furry Animals put a hidden track at the beginning of ‘Guerilla’, so you actually had to wind back from track 1 in order to hear it. That’s impossible now that everything is sold per song, and all the information is given away before you have a chance hear the record. What about short interludes, such as those in ‘The Wall’ or even as recent as ‘The Ugly Organ’ – do people just not buy these, opting to spend their money only on the song-length tracks? What is the point in even making full albums anymore?

This new CD is the first I have bought in 2011. In 2010 I think I bought only two or three, and only because they were from bands not available digitally. Icon Girl Pistols hope to make our second album this year, but a big question facing us and every other indie band is ‘do we make a CD or just sell downloads online?’ As a music fan, I want to make albums, tangible objects that you hold in your hands, flick through the pages of, discovering things you could not see when you bought it. I want people to hear the scratch of the vinyl or the whoosh of the CD when it finishes. But realistically, I know that when the album ends, the music will just keep on running straight into the (International) Noise Conspiracy. Although to be fair, that’s a great band to be opening for.

いやあまるで台湾ツアーに来たかのような3日間でした。
最高に楽しかったね。
silverbusもとてもよかったし、やっぱりtelephone boothは格別にカッコよかった。
3日間見て1度も飽きなかったよ。

そしてまさかのシャンパンシャワーは本当に嬉しかった。
（自分でかけた、という気もするが）
バースデーソングもね。今までで一番の誕生日だった。

なんかさ、演奏をしながら、
なんでバンドを抜けるのか自分でもよくわからなくなってました（笑）
悩んでいたことなんて、全然大したことじゃないのかも、とかね。
このメンバーと演奏するのは何より楽しいし。
でもやっぱり決めた時の気持ちに従います。

ちょっと最後に書かせてもらうとね、
なかなかさあ、何かに対する気持ちを純粋に保つって難しいことだと思うんすよね。
こんだけモノと情報があふれてると。
強い気持ちがないと、あっという間にそれに飲まれて、削られて、
「常識的な」事だけを身につけるようになっていく。
そしてみんな「社会的に真っ当な大人」になるわけです。

でもそれは、この年齢になって思うけど、表層的なものでしかない。
実は多くの人はそれに違和感を持っているんだよね。
みんなかりそめの常識を身に纏って生活している気がする。
特に真面目な日本人は。だからみんな窮屈そう。
俺の周りなんかけっこう今までやってきたことに悩みを持ち始めてる人がいる。

もちろん、真っ当な大人になって満足している人もいる。
その人と悩んでいる人とその違いはなにか、というと
やっぱりそれまでの生き方の問題なのだと思う。
本当に真っ当になりたいと思っている人と、
なりたいものとは違うのに、周りに合わせて演じていた人と。
なりたい者になれているか、それを目指せているか、っていうとこでの違い。

前者になるにはひとつを選択して他を切り捨てなければいけないし、
誘惑に負けない強い心が必要だと思うのです。

なんかね、あのガムソとかノブの空間にはね、ひとつのことを選択してやってきた
純粋さがあると思うんだよね。余計なものは何ひとつないじゃない？？
だからみんなあれだけ自由になれるんじゃないかな。

今世の中にはそういう空間ってなかなかない。
だから俺は今までノブとかガムソのことを何度か言葉で人に説明しようとしたけど、
全く伝わらなかった。
それはその人がそういった空間を今まで体験したことがないからなんだと思う。
だから来てもらうしかない。でも来たら何かを感じてもらえるはず。
俺はこのバンドのやってきたことが、全部あの空間に具現化されてると思うのです。
メンバーってポジションから離れることで、はじめてそんなことを思ったよ。

そしてバンドにいたことで、色んな見方も身についた。
以前と考え方もガラッと変わった気がする。
やっぱり人と話したりぶつかったりすることで、そういうものは研磨されていくんだね。

色々通過してまた1人になったけど、今までとは違う
また新しい感覚で色々やれそうだ。

音楽をずっと続けていれば、また何かの形で一緒になることもあるでしょう。
続けてるってのは歯車が回ってるってことだから。
ただそれがどうなるかは未来が決めることです。

さて、そろそろシャンパンまみれになったギターとエフェクターをきれいにして、
アコースティックギターの弦を張り替えるとしよう。
そしてnew currencyとmonthly downloadの曲をもう１度聴き返してみよう。

まあ、本当はLOSTの続き観るんだけどね。

はてさて、色々書こうと思ったのだけど、書こうと思ったときに書かないと
文章は出てこないもんだ。
書こうと思ったときにブログのパスワード忘れちゃっててさ～。

さて、27.28はもうご存知のとおり台湾から
Silver BusとTelephone Boothを招いてライブです。
自分の最後のライブとしてはなんとも奇遇なめぐり合わせ。
そしてガムソで最後というなんとも素敵な場所で終われるってね。

あれやこれや書いてもうす～いブログになりそうだから簡単に。

抜けるのはとても残念。だけど仕方がなかった。
でもきちんと話した結果だからこれでよかったと思っている。
ただ新之助とはちゃんと話したけど、
時間がなくて他の2人にちゃんと話せてないのはちょっと申し訳ない。
けどその辺は新之助が伝えてくれているでしょう。
まあ伝えてなくてもいいや。
本当はサイコロに「続ける」と「抜ける」って書いて
たまたま「抜ける」って目が出ただけなんだから（笑）

色々あったけど、メンバーには感謝の言葉しかない。
俺一人で活動していた時には思いもつかなかった音楽のアプローチと
アイデアがいつもこのバンドにはあった。
一緒にやれて楽しかった。

そしてほぼメンバーのエコとアキにも感謝してもしきれない。
二人がいてくれたのは何よりの支えになりました。
ただひとつ言うとしたら次回までにはもうちょっとボウリングの腕を磨いておけ、ってことだな。

そして足を運んでくれるみんなに何よりも感謝。
みんながいなければIGPは存在できない。
みんなが踊っている全部のシーンを俺は覚えてるよ。
ウソだけど。

まあ俺のことはこれくらいにして、とにかく27.28に来てちょうだい。
最後ギター燃やすから。
間違って健の自前のスネア燃やしちゃうかもしれないけど。
その時にはミッキーのモノマネをしながら謝ろう。

皆さん、アジアカップ見てますか？

ご存知の方も多いと思いますが、
うちのバンドはサッカー好きが多いんです。

とは言っても、大好きなのはクリスと白倉新之助で、
僕はミーハーで、あの二人ほどではないですが。
本当に好きなのはバスケですが。
身長が足らなくて中学でやめましたが。

ただ日本代表の試合はやはり見たくなります。
そんで今回のアジアカップは今のところ全試合見てますが、
１人誰よりも強烈に気になる新メンバーがいますよね。

この選手の顔は誰かに似てる。
あと監督ザックの顔も誰かに似てるのに思い出せない。

そんで、今回のこのブログで何が言いたかったかと言うと、

TELEPHONE BOOTH(電話亭)!!!

台湾の人気バンド、Telephone Booth(電話亭)が今月2011年1月に初来日します！！

エレクトロ/ロックバンドの彼らはシンセ、ギター、ドラムという
ベースレスの編成で、まるでBlonde Redheadのような、
幻想的で、独自の世界を築いているバンド。
ボーカルの女の子バービーはシンセを弾きながら透き通った優しい歌声で、
ギターのディランとドラムのルークがしっかりと後ろで世界を創って、支えている。

個人的にはドラムの、所々で入るパッドを使ったエレクトロな音が気持ちいい。笑

そんな彼らは昨年のIGPの台湾ツアーで一緒に高雄THE WALLで共演してくれて、
今月彼らが初の日本ツアーを行なうってことで、
東京で再び共演してくれることになった。

音楽も素晴らしいんだけど、3人ともとってもいい人たちで、めっちゃ優しい。
台湾ではとてもお世話になりました。早く3人に会えるのを楽しみにしてる♪

絶対彼らのライブを見に来た方がいい！

1月27日(木)の渋谷NOBでやるLADY JANE'S RAMBLING REVUEにも

彼らの友人の台湾のバンドSilverbusと一緒に出演してくれるし、

1月28日(金)の外国人の巣窟、阿佐ヶ谷GAMUSOでも一緒にやってくれる。

真面目に１年を振り返るよ。！番組の最後に重要なお知らせがあります！

2010年最後の日になりましたね。

１年間応援してくれたみなさん、ありがとう。

来年もまたありがとう。

今年１年間に渡ってお送りしたフリーダウンロード企画は楽しんで貰えたかな？

まさしく軽い気持ちで始めてしまったこの企画、出だしこそ良かったものの、

後半かなりしんどい時期もありました。

ダウンロードできるようになったら、直ぐにtwitterとかで発表してきたけど、

月によってはかなり月末ギリギリのバンジージャンプだったことに気付いていた人もいるはず。「脱NYC」かなあ。月が変わるまであと１５分くらいでやっと発表した。

それでもやってきて良かったと思えるのは、今後作る作品に活かせるように、毎回違う録音方法を試し、違うタイプの曲、演奏も色々と試して技術や知識を得られたこと。

正直言って今聞き返しても大失敗だったと思う曲もあるし、納得いかないのも色々ある。

時間に追われて仕方なく出してしまった曲もある。

まあそれも無料という設定でやったからこそ出来た無責任な態度だったので、

そういう点はとても良かったな。

少ないながらも、新しい曲を聴いてからライブに来てくれる人も居たし。

そういうスピード感は普通のレコードレーベルができない、DIYだからこその利点でした。

ちなみにどのくらいの人数がダウンロードしてくれてるかというと、

この年末に結果をみると、平均毎月1000ダウンロードは達成できたみたいです。

最後の曲「my bloody christmas」は台湾の1976効果があって、すでに7000ダウンロードにいっているみたい。関取花ちゃんとやった６月の「鸚鵡返し一族」もまた飛び抜けて高い数値になっていました。こうして他の様々な才能ある人々の力を借りて、来年以降ももっと面白いことをやろうと思ってるよ。

そして、何がこのフリーダウンロード企画をさらに大変にしていたかというと、録音、ミックス、マスタリングという過程以上に、ジャケット制作に追われたことでした。

思い返せば去年の１月に適当な感じでレコードアートワークを始めたら、その後シリーズかさせてしまい、後に引けなくなってしまった。

これもまた気に入ってるものと、なんだかなあってのとあるんだけど、みなさんはどう思われましたかね？俺としては、車輪のパーツを探すのに時間がかかった「車輪の下敷き」、鸚鵡の絵を描くのに熱中した「鸚鵡返し一族」、パートナーのアイディアに救われた「段ボールと殴り合い」あたりのジャケットは今見ても好きだな。

そんなこんなで、制作活動が忙しかった１年、ライブには大きな成果も、超えなきゃいけない課題も沢山あった１年でした。

来年ってのが明日から始まるみたいだけど、その来年をicon girl pistolsにとっても、応援してくれてるみんなにとっても、とにかく刺激的な年にしたいね。

フリーダウンロード企画で古い曲は結構発表できたので、その間に書き貯めていた新曲達を、遂にどういう形かで発表することになると思います。今年出した曲には2ヶ月前に書いた曲もあれば、７年前に書いた曲もあったので、現在を反映させたものを発表したいと思います。

それから、さっきも書いたけれど、他のアーティストのみなさんとも積極的にサムシングスペシャルを産み出したいですね。その第一弾が、来年１月最初のライブで早速なんですが、台湾のエレクトロ／ロックバンド、「telephone booth」を招いての2daysライブ。

1月27日渋谷NOB、1月28日阿佐ヶ谷Gamusoです。

渋谷NOBの方には台湾からもう一組silverbusというバンドも出てくれます。

詳細は年明けにまた発表すんね！

最後に一つ重大なお知らせが。

昨年６月あたりにバンドに加入し、1stアルバム「new currency」を一緒に制作、今年も１年共に戦ってきた、長谷川俊が脱退することになりました。

理由を此処に書くのはさ、そりゃあとっても難しいことだってのはみんなにも理解して貰えると思うのね。そういうのって、一つこうだってことでも無いじゃない。人生のことだから。まあ、誤解の無いように書いておくと、音楽性のズレっていうのも多少あり、タカシが充電したい気持ちってのもあり、そんな感じですね。仲違いでは決してございません。

今日も代官山unitで年越しを一緒にむかえるぜ！

長谷川俊の最後のライブが、これまた来月のNOB、Gamusoの2daysになります。

しかも最後の最後、28日は長谷川俊の誕生日でもあります！

この記念すべき日、是非是非みんなで遊びに来て、タカシのために狂乱のパーティーを！

A Reflection on the Year: Important Announcement at the End of this Post!

Finally it’s the last day of 2010. Thank you to all who have supported us this year. We hope you keep following us next year.

Did you manage to pick up all the singles available this year for free download? Hope you enjoyed the songs. We started out pretty carefree with this plan, and though I’m overall pleased with everything, things did get pretty difficult towards the end of the year. As soon as the download was available we announced it on twitter/facebook etc, but I think some of you may have noticed that some months we left it very much to the last minute! “Escaping NYC”… we managed to release that about 15 minutes before the end of October deadline.

The one thing that was really great about this year’s releases was that they allowed us to try out a different recording technique each time, different styles of music, different ways of playing. This knowledge is going to be helpful for everything we produce in the future. In all honesty, when I listen through them all now I still feel a couple of songs didn’t work out very well. There are many things I’m really not satisfied with. Some of the songs we made available without them being ready, just to get them out on time.

I guess that as we were releasing them for free, maybe that affected our attitude. But in a good way too I think. At the very least, there are people who listened to our songs and then came to see us live. The speed at which we recorded, mixed and mastered the songs was so much faster than normal; the good thing about doing everything ourselves.

You may be wondering how many people downloaded our songs, and it looks like we managed over 1000 downloads a month. The final song, “My Bloody Christmas” had the help of Taiwan’s 1976, and has already reached over 7000 downloads. “Family of Parrots” which featured Sekitori Hana has also been downloaded a lot. We hope that we can continue next year borrowing the talent of all these amazing musicians.

You may be wondering what the hardest thing was about these monthly free downloads; the recording, mixing or mastering… but more than that it was making the cover artwork! In January I started with the 7 inch record motif without really thinking about it, and it then developed into a whole series! Among these too, there are ones that I like and others that I don’t. What did you guys all think? For me, the time it took finding the parts for the “Crushed Beneath The Wheels” cover; the concentration in drawing the bird on the “Family of Parrots” cover; being saved at the last minute by an idea for “Cardboard Boxing”… those covers I look at now and I am really happy with them.

Whilst busy with all this creativity, we also managed to succeed in our live shows and overcome a few other problems. From tomorrow a new year begins, and I hope to make it an exciting year both for icon girl pistols and for everyone who listens to us. In the free download plan I was able to get a lot of older songs out to the public, and in the meantime have been thinking about how to release the new songs I have written over the last year. Among the singles released in 2010 there are songs written 2 months ago and songs written 7 years ago, so from here I want to release music that shows exactly where we are right now.

And so, like I said earlier, I hope that alongside various other artists we are able to produce something really special. The first step in that comes early next year in January, when we play two shows with Taiwanese electro/rock band Telephonebooth. The shows are:

Jan 28^th @ Asagaya GAMUSO

At the NOB show we will also be joined by another Taiwanese band ‘Silverbus’. More details will follow next year!

And finally, an important piece of news:

Takashi Hasegawa, who joined us in the summer of 2009, recorded our album ‘new currency’ with us and rocked the stage with us all through 2010, has decided to leave icon girl pistols. I think you all understand that it is hard to explain the reasons here. To put it simply, there were a few small musical differences, and also Takashi wants some time to recharge. It is all completely amicable and we are still the best of friends. Tonight we are all going to Daikanyama UNIT together to party into 2011!

Takashi Hasegawa’s last live shows with IGP will be next month’s gigs at NOB and GAMUSO. The final gig on Jan 28^th also coincides with his birthday! We hope you can all join us on this momentous occasion and give him a wild and crazy party!!

今晩は。
ちょっと前から新しいブログに変わってます。
ブックマークを以前のにしてくれてる人はこっちが見れてないかも知れない。
これからちょっと告知して回ります。

みんなクリスマスは如何お過ごしですか？
ドキドキワクワクしたりしてますか？
俺は、4時からアンパンマンの１時間スペシャルを見てました。
主要キャラ総動員でクリスマスにまつわる感動のストーリーを展開してくれました。
ずっと気になってた、ロールパンナちゃんも登場してくれました。
ロールパンナちゃんて、幼い子供にとって必要な立場なんでしょうか。
謎のお姉ちゃん。
バイキンマンもドキンちゃんも結局は善、登場するもの全てが善い者なアンパンマンですが、ロールパンナちゃんの存在感って、非常に人生の深みを感じさせる入り口になってますね。
俺が設定をよく知らないだけなのか。
ありがとうアンパンマン！

２３日のクリスマスパーティーに来てくれたみんなもありがとう！
楽しんでもらえたかな？
クリスのバンド、予想以上に良かったね。
１曲目の勢いから、フィーチャリングボーカルを交えての2曲。
全体的に楽しんで演奏してくれててとても良かった。
クリス結構ピックでも弾けるんじゃないか。

そして、弾き語りで出演してくれた、K太。
彼は俺が個人的に期待している若き詩人。
伝えたい事があって、それを真っ直ぐに作品にして、演奏する姿が非常に好きで、
今回は敢えて弾き語りという形で、シンプルさを追求して出てもらいました。
はっきり書くけど歌もギターもまだそんなに上手じゃないけれど、
あの演奏時間で最終的にあそこまで観客を沸かせて、楽しませるということ、
それが出来ていれば、演奏力なんて全然関係ないんだよね。
あの個性があれば使う楽器はギターじゃなくても、手拍子と喋りでも、
最終的にその場は熱気に包まれてるかも知れない。
前から彼にはそういう可能性があると思っていて、この日はそれを証明してくれました。
去年の御徒町凧みたいな。
音楽ってそうであればいい。
何か一番シンプルな塊が人の心を動かせば、方法はどれでもいいよね。
K太にはそれがあるから、これからも頑張って欲しい。
出てくれてありがとう。

もういつの間にか12月ということで、
今年聴いていたTOP5 ALBUMを勝手に発表します。

Roxは最近話題のイギリス人のR&Bシンガーで、
Rough Tradeから出てて、声だったり楽器の音だったり雰囲気だったり、
何かとても心地良くて最近のお気に入り。

The Coctailsはジャケの雰囲気で買ったんだけど、色んな楽器が入ってて、
雰囲気が最高です。ラウンジとかバーとかでやってそうな。

The Smithsは特に説明もいらないと思うけど、モリッシーの
あの独特の声がたまに無性に聴きたくなる。

The Blurは1stは前から持ってて好きだったんだけど、
ChrisがParklifeめっちゃいいっていうから聴いたら、
沢山いい曲あるじゃないですか。
Girls&BoysとかParklifeもいいけど、
End of A CenturyとClover Over Doverがすごい好き。

Johnny Cashの最後のアルバム。こんな爺さんになりたい。
あの渋い低い声でbeatlesのin my lifeとかNINのhurtとかのカバーとかもしてて、
本当にかっこいい。僕も歳取ったら歌おうかな。

まぁ、本当はIGPの曲を聴いてた時間が一番長いんだけどね。
今年やってた毎月の新曲無料ダウンロード企画もついに12月を迎えまして、
極上のクリスマスソングで締めくくろうと思いますが、
ゲストがね、豪華です。
